The Individual Within the Pack: Self Expression in the Age of Uniformity

I grew up with one foot in the arts and the other in sports. Like the rhythm of running, where one foot strikes the ground while the other lifts off, I moved between my passions, sometimes as the artist and other times as the runner.
I pushed the boundaries of runwear: vintage white horn-rimmed glasses on race day, shredded tees, and electric blue tights designed by Kappa in collaboration with NASA. With the freedom and exploratory nature of youth came the push and pull of self-expression. Cultural norms can dictate our choices and feed our insecurities, pressuring us to dress the part in the promise of belonging. I ping-ponged between standing out and fitting in, between the boldness of individuality and the comfort of conformity. That inner tension wasn’t left behind in adolescence; it’s a thread that continues through the ethos of Orithyia.
How does what we wear answer our need for individual expression while connecting us to inspiring and supportive communities?
When designing Orithyia collections, I always begin by asking: What can I evolve? How can I continue the conversation from a new perspective? What can I reimagine that challenges the norm yet feels fresh and strangely familiar once worn?
